Well. Last night was just short of disaster. DS threw up in the middle of the night. Twice. All over the bed, on the pillow, on the other kid and on his lovey. Oy.
After much consultation with the grandparents on the food options, and despite sending some food and snacks with him, it turns out dessert (Breyer’s Lactose Free Vanilla ice cream) had hidden gluten. Doh!
At the beginning of the school year, DS started having mysterious tummy aches that sometimes included vomiting. I kept thinking it was just because he started kindergarten. Bigger school + more kids = more germs, right? At first, I thought, for shits and grins, I’ll just test out a gluten free diet. It worked wonders…no tummy troubles! A couple of weeks later, I tried a gluten challenge. Not only did the tummy ache return, but his behavior was OFF THE HOOK. He was uber emotional. Massive tantrums. Once it was out of his system, he was an angel. It was like a freakin’ light switch. Needless to say, we stuck with the gluten free diet, but he still had the occasional tummy ache and sometimes would throw up. Then I learned about HIDDEN gluten. One would think that since it’s one of the top 8 allergens that it would have to always be labeled. Au contraire, mon frere! If the allergen is an ingredient in something else, it does not have to be labeled. WTH! Turns out there is hidden gluten in a few of the things he was still eating. Now that I’ve been diligent about checking things online, we haven’t had any issues. Until last night.
As tired and cranky as he is today, I hope this means he will go to sleep without issue tonight. Wish me luck!
